A construção da então igreja de Nossa Senhora da Praça foi principiada em 1517 segundo o traço do arquitecto régio Francisco de Arruda que trabalhava ao mesmo tempo no Aqueduto da Amoreira. Possui um carácter fortificado, com uma torre como fachada. Em 1570 com a criação do bispado de Elvas pelo Papa Pio V, a igreja de Nossa Senhora da Praça transformou-se na Sé de Elvas, título que viria a perder em 1881. Em termos artísticos, a Sé de Elvas é um templo originalmente manuelino, mas que perdeu esta traça durante os séculos após alterações mandadas fazer nele pelos bispos da cidade. São de salientar no exterior o seu portal neoclássico e os portais laterais manuelinos, enquanto no interior o visitante poderá ver uma decoração feita com motivos fito, zoo e antropomórficos, próximos do imaginário medieval. Em redor de todo o corpo da igreja corre um silhar de azulejo policromo de laçaria e rosas. A capela-mor, em mármore de várias cores, é de estilo barroco.
