Description
Português: Em 1646 foi criada a capelinha de Nossa Sra da Assunção, em 1748 construção da nova igreja em substituição a capelinha, sua administração e frequência era feita só pelos negros, isso em 1871, quando recebeu o título de capela real com seu emblema real na fachada frontal.

Durante décadas morou na casa dos fundos da igreja o arcebispo Dom Helder Câmera, onde hoje se encontra o seu acervo. Dom Helder Câmera, publicou 23 livros, sendo 19 deles traduzidos para 16 idiomas. Recebeu 30 títulos de Cidadão Honorário, 28 de cidades brasileiras, um da cidade de São Nicolau, na Suíça, em 1985, e outro em 1987, de Rocamadour, na França. Ao todo foram 716 títulos de homenagens e condecorações. Em 1985, dom Helder deixou a arquidiocese, aos 76 anos, em decorrência de ter cumprido a idade regulamentar para a aposentadoria episcopal.

Dom Helder Câmara faleceu no Recife, em 27 de agosto de 1999, de parada cardíaca e foi sepultado na catedral da Sé, em Olinda.
English: In 1646 the chapel of Nossa Sra da Assunção was created, in 1748 construction of the new church to replace the chapel, its administration and attendance was done only by blacks, this in 1871, when it received the title of royal chapel with its royal emblem on the facade front.

For decades, Archbishop Dom Helder Camera lived in the back house of the church, where his collection is now located. Dom Helder Camera has published 23 books, 19 of which have been translated into 16 languages. He received 30 Honorary Citizenship titles, 28 from Brazilian cities, one from the city of São Nicolau, Switzerland, in 1985, and another in 1987, from Rocamadour, France. In all, there were 716 titles of honors and decorations. In 1985, Dom Helder left the archdiocese, at the age of 76, as a result of having fulfilled the statutory age for episcopal retirement.

Dom Helder Câmara died in Recife, on August 27, 1999, of cardiac arrest and was buried in the Sé Cathedral, in Olinda.
