Description

O mais precioso pergaminho com que Mangualde pode documentar a sua longínqua origem, a Igreja Matriz. A igreja levantada tão longe do povoado deriva de um pequeno monasterium estabelecido nesse lugar nos meados do séc. XII, transforma-se em Igreja Matriz de S. Julião, também altura da criação do concelho em Azurara (1102). A actual igreja é de fundação dionisíaca do séc. XIII-XIV, restando desse tempo apenas o portal de volta quebrada da fachada sul, algumas pedras sigladas e os cachorros românico-góticos da fachada sul. Em 26 de Fevereiro de 1838 a frontaria ruiu, sendo reconstruída em 1841, não se guardando nessa reconstrução as características da sua primitiva feição. 

 A capela-mor oferece um belíssimo conjunto de talha dourada de estilo nacional iniciado em 1709. O tecto apainelado, formado por 18 caixotões pintados por artista de recursos que representam apóstolos, doutores da igreja, Nossa Senhora e S. Julião. Existem ainda várias tábuas de pintura maneirista pintadas em 1635 por António Vieira, pintor de Lamego, para o antigo retábulo.

No adro existem três sepulturas escavadas na rocha a descoberto da antiga necrópole medieval.
