Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Igneous intrusions into the slate rock Slate is the oldest rock in the Cwmystradllyn area. It began as mudstone which became changed in character by heat and pressure during the process of mountain building. At that time, the mudstone formed deep below the sea was subjected to the effects of molten igneous material which forced its way into the measures, changing them into slate. Igneous rocks, like the white bands seen here, do not cleave so cannot be split into slates and are good only for dumping on the waste tips. Quarrying at Gorseddau was bedevilled by the frequency of such intruded materials.
