En el 1088 esta iglesia fue reconstruida bajo influencia románica aprovechando la existencia de un templo anterior que prácticamente estaba en ruinas. La iglesia está de cara al este, lo que no es muy común en esta región. También está de cara a la tumba gallega de Santiago, y esta es probablemente la razón.

La iglesia todavía contiene algunos recuerdos importantes del templo formado por la basílica, la torre del campanario y las partes de la bóveda románica. Conserva restos significativos del templo construido a final del siglo XI y buena prueba de ello, son las tres naves de su planta y la atípica torre-campanario que ha sido objeto de recientes reconstrucciones.

En su interior se reparten numerosas imágenes del XVIII. También destaca la capilla del Rosario que hace recordar el tiempo en que este templo pertenecía a los dominicos y que provocó que esta iglesia fuera conocida también como la iglesia de Santo Domingo. (Calle Ferrenal).
