Español: En la antigua ciudad de Panamá, los frailes agustinos recoletos, tenían un templo dedicado a San José, el cual logró salvarse del asalto de los piratas de Morgan, porque estaba lejos de la ciudad. Se narra, según la historia, que un fraile de nombre Juan, originario de la Villa de Los Santos, se encontraba al cuidado del templo, cuando se produjo el saqueo de la ciudad por parte de los piratas; y éste para evitar que los adornos y el altar de oro de la iglesia fueran robados por los fascinerosos de Morgan, los cubrió con una mezcla de albayalde para darles la apariencia de un trabajo inconcluso salvando así esta joya de labrado y orfebrería. Este altar se caracteriza por tener una cubierta dorada de dos dedos de grosor y sus figuras de oro macizo incrustadas en la madera. Al ordenarse la fundación de la nueva ciudad, el altar fue trasladado en 1677 a su nueva sede. El mismo es un derroche de tallados barrocos con fuertes influencias indígenas o arte colonial, propio de las naciones iberoamericanas. Por la conformación de la arquitectura de la iglesia, parece que se siguió el modelo, planos y las medidas de la primera, puesto que el altar mayor cabe perfectamente en su nueva construcción. El conjunto arquitectónico parece estar bastante lejos de su construcción original, si tomamos en cuenta que en él se han realizado restauraciones entre 1904 y 1916.
