Español: La primera edificación de la iglesia de El Carmen estaba localizada en el predio que ocupa el colegio Belén, la cual inició en el año 1856 gracias a la iniciativa de León de Jesús Castillo, hijo del prócer Pedro Pablo Castillo. Para el año 1866 el templo fue entregado a la orden de los capuchinos. El año 1873 el mismo Castillo logró obtener varios terrenos para la nueva construcción, y el 27 de noviembre de 1878 fue colocada la primera piedra.
León falleció en 1891, por lo que la continuación de la obra quedó en manos del padre Juan José Bernal, seguida posteriormente por el religioso José E. Argueta, y principalmente el padre José María López Peña, quien tomó el proyecto el 1 de mayo de 1896 y lo terminó entre 1913 y 1914. Para 1916 el templo, junto a su residencia anexa, pasaron a manos de la Compañía de Jesús. En su diseño también intervinieron José Pascasio González, Luz Molina y José Ruiz, y prestaron valiosa colaboración económica varias familias reconocidas de la ciudad. La actual imagen de la Virgen del Carmen fue elaborada en Barcelona y bendecida el 12 de julio de 1931. El templo, de notable estilo gótico, sufrió daños por el terremoto del año 1917, y principalmente por los del 2001 que la dejó en ruinas. Sin embargo, su estructura domina el Paseo El Carmen, destino turístico de Santa Tecla.
