Summary
[edit]DescriptionIfield Bay - geograph.org.uk - 403201.jpg |
English: Ifield Bay A bridleway from the A264, Horsham - Crawley road, heads north over the bay (dialect word for dam) which held back the waters of Bewbush brook to power the bellows of Ifield furnace. Now it holds back the landfill of Crawley and Horsham.
The furnace ran together with Ifield forge to produce Sussex iron, but the owner backed the Royalist cause and in 1643 both forge and furnace were destroyed. See http://www.wealdeniron.org.uk/ - the Wealden Iron Research Group and 'Wealden iron' by Ernest Straker. 1931 The way is always dry - being made of blast furnace slag. |
