Summary
[edit]DescriptionIdes O'Racca windows toward corner (1).jpg |
English: Ides O' Racca as of uploading is currently a dilapidated Art Deco structure. This was inaugurated in 1935, located in the historical district of San Nicolas, Manila; though it may be more easily referred to as part of Divisoria. It fronts Divisoria Mall.
Ides O'Racca was initially built as a cold storage plant, and was named after Dr. Isidro de Santos. The year after it was inaugurated, it was sold to the Japanese O’Racca confectionery company. Subsequently after World War II, it was passed down to Philippine government ownership. As of uploading, the building still stands albeit in a derelict condition. As a construction (from a demolition) currently takes place in an adjacent lot separated by Carmen Planas St., the building is fitted with support braces and netting to lessen the impact of vibrations on its structural integrity. Fronting its ground floor are stalls side by side donning wide umbrellas that sell confectionery and other plasticware; a curious wink to it having been a former space for production of sweets. The building was recognized in 2014 as a Significant Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines. Hence, the building is protected under the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009 from demolition purposes.
