Summary

[edit]
Description

This identity disc was worn by Owen Yorke of Ruawai, a member of the 2nd Batallion Auckland Infantry Regiment, killed in action in France on 21 February 1917.

Private Yorke had been initially reported as missing in action. His disc was returned to the British War Office by Germany along with a list of soldiers buried. Next of kin were informed of his death in December 1917.

The identity disc was attached to an affidavit sworn by Robert Owen Yorke, brother of Owen, and is part of Owen Yorke’s probate record. Probate records contain a copy of the deceased person’s will and may include other material to prove their date of death such as letters and telegrams, particularly when the person has died in action.

FamilySearch volunteers are digitising probate records held by Archives New Zealand and recently came across this disc during digitisation work in Auckland.
