| Description |
English: Ickworth Park - site of former lake In 1823 a dam was thrown across the River Linnet, causing the area in view to form a lake, extending to over 13 acres. The purpose of this was to prevent people from using the Chevington Way, a droving route into Bury St Edmunds. The presence of the lake forced farmers to use a more lengthy route into town, but no doubt pleased the Marquis at Ickworth House. The dam burst in 1843, causing flooding in Bury St Edmunds. The lake was never reinstated. |
