Description
English: “Ičko’s House” in Zemun was built in 1793. It has a cellar, ground floor and first floor under the mansard high roof. It was designed in the style of classicism, has two tracts and dual function. “Kraljević Marko” tavern was on the ground floor and the first floor was residential. It was reworked in the meantime. A complete reconstruction and revitalization was done in the 1880s. It has all the features of representative bourgeois house from the late eighteenth century. The building is known as the House of Ičko because the Serbian Uprising diplomat and merchant Petar Ičko stayed in it when he had to leave Belgrade for Zemun after the establishment of Turkish official administration. Ičko played a significant role in the preparations of the First Serbian Uprising of 1804. He was a commercial consul and mediator between the merchants from Zemun, Thessalonica and other cities. He stayed in Zemun in the period 1802-1803. The Building is one of the oldest preserved houses, the proof of the urban character of the old downtown Zemun and therefore registered as a cultural heritage monument of great value.
