Summary

[edit]
Description
English: March brings warm summertime temperatures to Antarctica, with long sunny days driving average temperatures as high as 10˚C (50˚F) in the warmest parts of the region. Also, sea ice reaches minimum and ice-free ocean reaches maximum, freeing icebergs from frozen winter resting places and allowing them to travel with the currents of the Southern Ocean.

On March 2, 2017 the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite passed over the Ross Sea and captured a true-color image of Iceberg B30 adrift in open water.

According to the U.S. National Ice Center, on March 3 Iceberg B30 was located at 73°38'S and 155°21'W. The hefty iceberg measured approximately 30 mi (48.3 km) wide and 21 mi (34 km) wide. At 630 square miles, the iceberg is roughly more than half the size of Rhode Island and about ten times the size of Washington, D.C.
