English: More than sixteen years after calving from the Ross Ice Shelf, pieces of the world’s second largest iceberg remain afloat. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured a true-color image of Iceberg B15K drifting in the South Atlantic Ocean on November 7, 2016.
In March 2000, a piece of ice that measured over 11,000 square kilometers in size - larger than the island of Jamaica - broke off the Ross Ice Shelf and began to slowly drift away from the calving site. Named B15, this iceberg slowly broke into smaller pieces. Each piece was named alphabetically as they broke away. The first piece to break off the “mother” ‘berg was B15A. Late in 2003, a large needle-shaped chunk broke off of B15A. As the eleventh piece of B15, this iceberg was dubbed B15K. Iceberg B15K has remained afloat since that time. According to the U.S. National Ice Center (NATICE), B15K is currently located at 3 49°03'S and 36°29'W. It measures about 18.5 mile (30 km) by 3.5 mile (5.6 km). At roughly 64.75 square miles, Iceberg B15K is slightly larger than Liechtenstein and slightly smaller than Washington, DC. NATICE reports the position of five large icebergs from the original giant: B15K, B15T, B15Z, B15AA, and B15AB. Of those five, B15T is the largest, at almost twice the size of B15K and B15AB is the smallest. |
