Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ice house on Portree Quay This disused building at the landward end of Quay Street was once the ice house for the fishing industry of Portree. With its thick walls, and being built into the steep bank behind, it was very well insulated. From when it was built, probably sometime in the 1820s, it was packed each year with blocks of ice cut from local lochs during the winter. The ice was then used to store fish throughout the year. In 1952, with the coming of the first electricity supply in Skye, a refrigeration plant was installed to produce ice in situ. The ice house ceased to function as such in the 1960s.
