March 2, 2015 Leonardo, New Jersey Researchers from the Coast Guard Research and Development Center, located in New London, Connecticut, test the efficiency of their “Ice Cage Skimmer” at Ohmsett. The metal structure around the skimmer is designed to keep large pieces of ice away while allowing oil to migrate into the skimmer. This technology is envisioned to support oil spill response in the Arctic and other cold weather environments. The large, gray slide in the middle of the picture is used to introduce large pieces of ice into the tank. The ice can be manufactured onsite for various training and testing needs. Ohmsett – The National Oil Spill Response Research & Renewable Energy Test Facility - provides independent and objective performance testing of full-scale oil spill response equipment and marine renewable energy systems (wave energy conversion devices), and helps improve technologies through research and development. It is the largest outdoor saltwater wave/tow tank facility in North America and is the only facility where full-scale oil spill response equipment testing, research, and training can be conducted in a marine environment with oil under controlled environmental conditions (waves and oil types).
