Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A statue from the Roman Period. On the web a site by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism offers [1] a folder about this museum. It states that a G. Guidi (wrote an Annuario, 1921-22) visited the city in 1920 and thought, in view of the size of the building (dating back to the 2nd century AD) it might have been a fish market or macellum (where meat might be sold also). In Turkish it hence is named Milas Iassos Balik Pazari Museum, translated to Milas Iasos Fish Market Museum. In the centre of a rectangular courtyard there is a monumental tomb on a podium. It has a prostylos plan. Arched porticos surrounding the courtyard, there are many stone and terracotta finds on display. But on a website by the Selçuk University - Faculty of Literature - Department of Archeology one can find "Next to some of the standing arches of the 1st century AD aqueduct, there is a large quadriporticus building. Italian archaeologists visiting Iasos in the early 20th century thought that this structure, which was then largely buried, should be identified with the fish market of the ancient city, referred to by Strabo. The local Turkish name, ‘Balık Pazarı’, which is still in use, has derived from this erroneous identification. This is in fact a mausoleum of the Roman period, dating to the 2nd century AD, whose structure displays Syrian influences."
