Iani: "Janus" Late Cretaceous, North America

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Iani is a basal iguanodontian dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of what is now Utah, in the United States. It is named after Janus, the Roman god of transitions, as a reference to its evolutionary placement between Tenontosaurus and the Rhabdodontidae. During the Cenomanian, increasing global temperatures caused rising sea levels. This led to the disappearance of many large sauropods in North America, opening niches for the smaller iguanodontians, like Iani, which would eventually give rise to the massive hadrosaurs of the Late Cretaceous.
