English: Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA (Mar. 15, 2002) -- Secretary of the Navy, The Honorable Gordon R. England, center, accompanied by Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), far left, Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA), center left, and Rep. Ed Schrock (R-VA), speaks with members of the press after touring a "Hush House” facility aboard NAS Oceana. The Hush House is a noise abatement structure used by the Navy to provide a solution to the increasing number of noise complaints from area residents around the master fighter jet base at Oceana. The sound-absorbing hangar is used for high-power jet engine tests conducted at the station. The hangar will not be completed until May, and when fully operational, the sound level outside of the hanger should range at approximately 48 decibels, the equivalent of everyday street traffic. The Navy currently has eight other hush houses throughout the United States. U.S. Navy photo by Chief Photographer’s Mate Dolores L. Parlato. (RELEASED) |
