| Description | This is a fruit from the Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) in our garden. Pliny said in his book Naturalis Historia that the species name "unedo" is a contraction of the words "unum edo" meaning “I eat one”. It isn't clear if he meant they are so delicious that one is so good you don't need more, or if they are unpleasant so no-one would want more than one. I decided to find out which was right. The fruit is best when so ripe it falls from the tree, but no riper because soon after it begins to ferment. The specimen in my experiment was at optimum ripeness. I washed it, cut it and first tried a bit with the skin on. That was a mistake as the skin is quite tough and unpalatable. So I scooped out some of the flesh. It tasted nice, rather like a very mild mango taste. However after the sweet pulp had gone I was left with a lot of gritty seeds in my mouth. In fact there seemed to be more seeds than the few I could see in the pulp. Maybe the tiny immature seeds are hard enough to be unpleasant. Anyway, after my test I didn't try a second fruit and have no plans to do so, ever. |
