- Le prigioni sotterranee del Palazzo Ducale, collocate al disotto del livello dell'acqua e perciò estremamente umide e malsane, destinate ai prigionieri di condizioni inferiori, rinchiusi in celle oscure ed anguste, prendevano l'inequivoco nome di Pozzi. Una leggenda narra che un tempo ai condannati a morte fosse concessa, come ultima possibilità di scampo, di tentare il giro della colonna. Infatti tuttora una delle colonne del Palazzo Ducale è leggermente più grande delle altre. Il tentativo consisteva nel girare intorno alla colonna, dalla parte esterna, senza scivolare ma quasi nessuno riusciva a completare l'operazione. Al disotto del tetto del palazzo e delle sue coperture erano invece i Piombi, che devono il loro nome alla copertura del tetto: qui trovavano posto i prigionieri più particolari (Giacomo Casanova il più noto, e autore di una spettacolare evasione), nobili, ricchi, religiosi, che venivano relegati quindi in un ambiente che, per quanto duro, risultava meno malsano rispetto agli infernali Pozzi. Questi prigionieri potevano addirittura, a loro spese, provvedere a dotare le loro celle di piccoli sollievi, mobilia e di buon cibo. Tutte queste prigioni erano direttamente collegate ai tribunali presenti nel Palazzo.
