Picture description | Framed drawing of the so-called "Tower of Marzocco". The tower is a 54 m high, octagonal renaissance-tower at the port entrance of the harbour of Livorno (Region Tuscany). The tower was constructed in the mid of the 15th century for military purposes on the ruins of an older tower from Roman times. There are different opinions about the designer of this tower. The 8 faces of this tower are perfectly orientated to the different directions of the wind. The "Marzocco" was originally a bronze statue of a lion as symbol of power which topped the tower until 1729, as he was stricken and destroyed by a lightning. The "Tower of Marzocco" in 2010. |
