Title
IOW-F98B27 Roman Samian Ware Dish
Description
English: A sherd from a Roman Samian Ware dish, form type 18/31, dating to the late 1st to mid 2nd century AD (Webster 1996, 30-35).

The sherd is from the base of the dish with part of a foot ring. The floor of the base rises slightly towards the centre of the dish. Close to the break, on the outer edge, there is a change of angle in an upwards direction. However, only a small portion of this part is visible.

Length: 67.8mm; width: 51.6mm; maximum thickness at ring: 8.1mm. Weight: 28.09g.

Samian Ware was made in France and imported into Britain from the 1st to the mid 3rd century. The bowl here is a type which was made in the late 1st to the mid 2nd century. The floor of the vessel rises slightly and this has been the identifying feature for this sherd.
