Title
IOW-DFD1F4 Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) Buckle Pin
Description
English: An incomplete corroded and damaged Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) buckle pin (c. AD 575-625).

The loop is missing.
This pin is a 'shield-on-tongue' type. The integral plate over the pin is shaped like a violin. It is convex on the upper face and flat on the underside. In plan, it has a rounded end then a waist formed by two rounded cut-outs (opposite each other), then a rectangular lobe at each side with a notch in the outer faces. The missing loop was made of iron and the remains of it can be seen embedded on the underside where there is also iron staining. The shaft of the pin tapers slightly in width towards the tip end where it down-curves.
The surfaces, where they are not obscured by corrosion, are shiny, smooth and appear to have been tinned. Alternatively, the metal may have a high tin content. A small patch of corroded iron can be seen on one side of the shaft. There is also active bronze disease overall.
43.62 x 17.34 x 8.73mm. Weight: 16.53g.

These pins are characteristic of late 6th and early 7th-century.
