Title
IOW-D01F96 Medieval Sword Pommel
Description
English: A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy sword pommel (c. 1300-c. 1450).

This pommel is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. In width, it is slightly narrower at the top than at the bottom. Each face is flat and the edges are bevelled at each side. A rectangular tapering hole extends through the pommel from top to bottom. At the top it measures c. 18.0mm x c. 11.0mm and at the bottom it is c. 12.0mm x c. 8.0mm.

Each face is decorated in a similar manner and has been inscribed to form a cross potent. In each of the angles there is a single motif of different design consisting of a fleur-de-lis; a trefoil or a quatrefoil.

This pommel is in good condition and has two modern dents. It is tinned overall.
Height: 45.09mm; width: 48.02mm; thickness: 27.52mm. Weight: 233.86g.
The pommel is a Type VIII wheel-pommel and is similar to examples published in the London Museum Catalogue (Ward Perkins 1940: 33, fig 5, refs: 1-3).
