Title
IOW-7C12C4 Post-Medieval Sound 'Pea' (lead shot)
Description
English: A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy spherical 'crotal' bell (c. 1575-c. 1625). The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top measures 10.6 x 14.8 x 5.4mm and has an oval perforation for suspension. The body has an upper and lower hemisphere divided equally by a prominent horizontal circumferential rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about half way down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a sub-circular sound hole, about 10.5mm in diameter. There is a break at the side of one of the holes. Two smaller sound holes in the lower hemisphere are integral with a sound "slit". The upper and lower hemispheres are decorated with a 'sunburst' design. To one side of the sound slit there is maker's mark in the form of a capital letter T within a straight-topped shield. This may represent a founder's hammer.

The outer surface of the bell is worn and the upper hemisphere is much more worn than the lower one. The top of the suspension loop is thin and this may be a result of wear during the time that it was suspended. The breaks are old. A patina on the outer face varies between mid-green and dark green. It is also corroded in places. The inner face of the bell is obscured by superficial greyish green corrosion products.
Height: 61.4mm; diameter: 49.7mm. Weight: 88.81g.
A sound 'pea' was within the bell when it was discovered. This is a cast lead shot. It is sub-spherical and has a circumferential casting seam with an associated sprue scar. Almost at right angles to the seam there is a circumferential groove. However part of it is worn, probably as a result of movement within the bell. Its surface is light grey.
Maximum diameter (including sprue): 14.9mm; diameter (excluding sprue): 13.7mm. Weight: 14.95g.

A bell with similar decoration and a similar maker' mark has been recorded and dated late 16th to early 17th century (Bailey 1995: 41-41, ref: 12). A similar bell with a similar maker's mark has been recorded from Marazion Parish, Cornwall. See, Portable Antiquities Scheme find: CORN-5AE9D1. However, the T on the Cornish example is not within a shield, but within a semi-circle.
