Title
IOW-04FCC Roman Enamelled Plate Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy enamelled plate brooch (AD 100-300).

Part of the plate, the pin and most of the enamel are missing.
This brooch, when complete, would have been oval in plan. At the front it has a central oval cell divided from an outer cell by a reserved flat metal ridge. It has a raised rim at the edge. Although the central cell is empty, there is a black deposit which may be the remains of decorative material or adhesive. Within the outer cell there is a small area of decayed off-white enamel with flecks of blue enamel. The floor of the outer cell has been scored to form oblique grooves forming a key for the enamel.
The rear face is slightly convex and at one end there is a pierced pin lug containing an iron axis bar. Around the bar there are the remains of a lateral copper-alloy spring with an internal chord. At the opposite end the catch-plate is almost intact; the curled-over part that secured the pin is missing.
This brooch is corroded in places and has a green patina. The breaks are old.

Height: 27.17mm; width: 18.89mm; thickness: 8.11mm. Weight: 4.15g.
Similar brooches have been published (Hattatt 1989: 364; refs: 1207, 1208; Bayley and Butcher 2004: 134, fig. 100, refs: 386, 387).
Similar examples have been recorded on The Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds: BERK-D6CDF6; BUC-ED53E6; DOR-B5B2FB; HESH-20BB34; LVPL-B41AC8; SUSS-809794; SUR-D2A0F5; SWYOR-17E8C5 and YORYM-ADB6B1.
