Title
IOW-031226 Medieval Annular Buckle
Description
English: An almost complete Medieval cast copper-alloy annular buckle (c. 1270-c. 1400).

It has been identified as a buckle rather than a brooch as it does not have a constriction for the pin. The plain frame is circular in plan. It is flat on both faces and the inner and outer sides are convex. The tapering copper-alloy wire pin is circular in cross-section.
Some material has been lost from the frame due to corrosion or damage. It has a dark green patina, except where it is damage or corroded. Old scratch marks are visible on the frame.
Outer diameter: 26.6mm; width of frame: 3.6mm; thickness of frame: 3.0mm. Weight: 3.94g. The pin has a length of 21.2mm and the maximum thickness of the shaft is 1.5mm.

Similar buckles have been recorded from London and dated c. 1270-c. 1400 (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 57, fig. 36, ref: 29-38).
