Description
English: ID number: P04233.001

Photographer: John Samuel Wiley
Place: Brisbane, Queensland
More than 3‚000 Australian nurses volunteered for active service during the First World War. The first draft of nursing staff, drawn primarily from the Australian Army Nursing Service Reserve, embarked in September 1914; among them were Constance Keys, Eunice Paten, Bertha Williams, and Julia Hart. Nurses were subject to specific enlistment standards. Between them, these four women possessed more than 15 years‛ nursing experience. Despite their extensive training, they would be continually tested by the conditions of trench warfare and the dreadful injuries brought about by the advances in modern weaponry.
