Summary

[edit]
Description

Hylaeus dilatatus (Chalk Yellow-face Bee) from the Netherlands. Note in this male the greatly expanded scapes (these are the first antennal segments). Females do not have these expansions and across the genus Hylaeus males range from female style scapes to giant ones like this. Makes you think it is some how linked to sexual selection...but exactly what its use is unclear. Other bee genera that I can think of do not have these expanded scapes. Naturalis prefers that the source of the specimen is traceable. This can be achieved by using the CC-BY-SA license when you share the photos on e.g. www.flickr.com/photos/usgsbiml. Also also to add the following text to all photos of this collection of specimen, replacing the text "All photographs are public domain, feel free to download and use as you wish": The specimen in this photo is provided by Naturalis Biodiversity Center in The Netherlands. For inquiries please contact: Frederique Bakker, email: frederique.bakker@naturalis.nl. Photo license: CC-BY-SA. This photo can be reused as you wish. When doing so, please credit the creator (USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab) and the source (Naturalis Biodiversity Center) and adaptations must be shared under the same terms.

We Are Made One with What We Touch and See

We are resolved into the supreme air, We are made one with what we touch and see, With our heart's blood each crimson sun is fair, With our young lives each spring impassioned tree Flames into green, the wildest beasts that range The moor our kinsmen are, all life is one, and all is change.
