The Dental Hygienist.—The legality of employing regis-tered assistants for the performance of operations on the teethgave rise to a controversy within the profession which finaltyresulted in an appeal to the legislatures of the various statesand in the enactment of laws that placed the practice of oralprophylaxis upon a legal basis and created a new and usefulvocation for women who are known as Dental Hygienists. Thework of a dental hygienist is carried on in much the same man-ner as was originally done by Dr. Smith, some modificationsand elaborations having been added since that time. The dental hygienist is given a good perspective of thefield of dental practice and is thoroughly trained in the activ-ities which she is to undertake. Not only does she cleanand polish teeth but in addition she is able to assist in anaes-thesia, x-ray work and the preparation of patients for oper-ations. The recent and rapid development of dental hygiene workamong school children has created an opening for dental hy-gienists in the official health organization of many communi-ties.
