| Description |
English: Hyde Park Corner: The Wellington Arch The arch was designed in 1825 by the then young architect Decimus Burton (1800-1881) and completed in 1828. It was intended as both a victory arch marking the Duke of Wellingtons defeat of Napoleon and as a grand outer entrance to Buckingham Palace. In 1846 the Arch subsequently became the subject of fierce debate when it was topped with a 28' high equestrian statue of the Duke which many thought disproportionate.
By 1883, Hyde Park Corner had developed into a serious traffic bottleneck, so, to ease the congestion, and to defuse the arguments, the Arch was dismantled, moved 20 metres and rebuilt in its present location where it marked the western end of Constitution Hill. At the same time, the Wellington statue was removed and sent to Aldershot. It was eventually replaced in 1912 with Peace Descending on the Quadriga of War, designed by Captain Adrian Jones. This is the largest bronze statue in the UK. The Arch was isolated from Constitution Hill and onto its current island site by the remodelling of Hyde Park Corner in the early 1960s. |
