Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Hyde Park: Rotten Row At one time known as The King's Old Road, Rotten Row was completed in 1690 on the instructions of King William III. Having moved his court to Kensington Palace, William wanted a safer way to travel to and from his previous palace in Whitehall. It was originally illuminated with 300 oil lamps, so it was the first artificially lit highway in the country. The name "Rotten Row" may be a corruption of the French 'Route de Roi' or King's Road. Its sandy surface is now used for horse-riding.
