Summary

[edit]
Description Hyatt House Hotel in Lincolnwood (1960-2013). It was the chain's flagship hotel in the Chicago area until the O'Hare Hyatt opened 11 years later. The unusual purple brick design was of disputed origin: the owner alleged it was a manufacturing error while the architects claim it was part of the design. Its most notorious chapter occured in 1983, when Teamsters lawyer and purported Chicago Outfit associate Allen Dorfman was murdered in the parking lot. Dorfman had just been convicted of bribing US Senator Howard Cannon. Authorities were allegedly trying to get Dorfman to cooperate in an investigation against other Chicago Outfit members. The hotel left the Hyatt chain in the 1990s. It was shuttered in 2007 due to health code violations with mold found in almost all of the rooms. A campaign to save the striking building was launced in 2013, culminating in the building's listing on the NRHP, but demolition began in August anyway.
