Atthis it turned over on its back and remained motionlessin the shallow water. I was all excitement to get at it,but the boatmen pointed out the impossibility of doingso without running a great risk. As the water was quiteshallow it would be out of the question to try to reachthe beach with the boat at that point, so we left thecarcase, intending to get it later on returning by terrafirma. After landing on the shore, however, we hadsuch sport shooting others, that it was only just beforesundown that we remembered about it. Four boys weresent out, but they returned to say that the brute hadvanished leaving only a thin trail of blood on the sand.Apparently others had dragged it off. The boygot a stout branch and prepared to thrust it into thehuge mouth, but there was no need for this as one bullethad entered just behind the eye, and the other foundits billet behind the shoulder.
