iKMIXOLE CAMP FIRE. of a plant which grows in the dry, sandy lands of South Florida and isvery plentiful in some localities. The root of the plant alone is used.This is first carefully peeled and washed, after which it is thrown into a THE SEMINOLE INDIANS. II large wooden vessel or trough, where it is ground and pounded intoa powder; this powder is then carefully washed, and after repeatedwashing becomes very white and clean. Ifit is not entirely free from dirt upon beingwet it assumes a pale pinkish color, but ifthoroughly cleansed it remains perfectly ^^^ sofkee-spoon.white. This is called coontie by the Indians, and is prepared much in the same manner as we usecornstarch or arrowroot. It is sometimes mixed with wheat flourand made into cakes, which when fried are very palatable.
