Summary

[edit]
Description This is the former house of John and Minerva Hunter, which stands along Caney Fork Road in the Caney Fork community near Cullowhee, North Carolina. Constructed around 1887, the Folk Victorian-style house with Carpenter Gothic elements features three gabled wall dormers on the front facade, which give the house a distinctive appearance, though there is a similar house from the same time period along East Fork elsewhere in the county. The building was built by John Nelson Hunter, whom moved to the area from Texas in 1887 with his wife Minerva in hopes that the mountain air would cure her late-stage tuberculosis. However, this proved to not be enough to save her, and she died later that year. Hunter went on to marry Minerva’s sister, Emily, and they raised a family in the house, with one of their descendants still living in the house today. The historic home is one of the most notable buildings in this part of the county, and is a part of the legacy of tuberculosis patients who sought out the region’s clean, crisp air during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, which led to the construction of several summer homes and sanatoriums that helped ease their suffering.
