His waistcoat will afterwards share thesame fate, and subsequently his necktie, untilyou see him reduced to his shirt sleeves, and itis only now that he commences to thoroughlyenjoy himself, and he dances aw^ay for hours.Of course the picturesque costumes of bothsexes lend an additional charm to the scene.^But I will not detain the reader any longer withmy meagre description ; let us pass on and wit-ness some other festivities. It may be of interest here to note that Strauss, who isthe creator of the Valse, has partly copied the steps of thecsárdás while decreasing their speed, and the valse minuetwhich he was about to bring out would have been a nearerapproach still to the mother dance.

CHAPTER VÍII. PEASANT CUSTOMS AND FESTIVITIES. In describing the festivals and customs of thepeasants, it would be impossible to limit themto the ground of the Alföld. Indeed, veryoften those of their Magyar brethren from thesurrounding districts excel their own in origin-ality. I shall therefore give a description ofsome of the festivals peculiar to the Magyars,without paying attention to any particulardistrict, and note at the same time that whilstthose customs are still in existence in certainparts, they have partly died out in others, ormay vary very much in form. I shall thereforecommence by following the peasant from aromantic point of view, from the days of hiscourtship to that of his wedding.
