English people arespecial favourites of the Magyars, because theHungarian is as liberal-minded as the English-man (the Hungarian Constitution having beengranted about the same time as the English),and like all Britons he is a fine rider, goodsportsman, and above all is always ready toacknowledge the kind hospitality shown by theEnglish to the Hungarian refugees in 1849.Almost every educated Hungarian speaksEnglish fluently, and imitates the English indress. There is quite an English colony atBudapest, and also an English church and club.The Gresham Life Assurance Society and otherInsurance Companies have large offices there,and several well-known English firms, such asClayton and Shuttleworth, etc., have branchfactories there. But I shall not detain thereaders any longer at Budapest. My objectis to give a picture of true Hungarian countrylife, and for that I shall have to lead them intothe Alföld (the Low^lands), the heart of Hun-gary, which is occupied by Magyars only.

CHAPTER VÍI. THE MAGYARS AND THE ALFÖLD (tHE LOWLANDS). The Alföld, which occupies an area of 35,000square miles, offers more interest to those whomay find their way there than any other country.You will not find huge mountains and wildscenery, but everything is quite novel andunique of its kind. As the Carpathian moun-tains excel the Alps in picturesque grouping,so do the plains of the Alföld in comparisonwith those of other countries. In order torealize their grandeur they should be seen insummer, when everything is green.
