Text Appearing Before Image:
aringthat the wild scenery of the great Carpathians farexceeds in beauty that of Switzerland, and is onlyto be compared with the most stupendous regionsof the Himalayas. Naturally, we were anxious toget there. We skipped that part of the Danube betweenKalocsa and Zimony, to save time, and because itwas said to be uninteresting. I have seen much ofit since, at various times, under many effects. Itis all, and always, attractive with that wistfulcharm peculiar to great rivers. Text Appearing After Image:
FROM AUSTRIA TO ORSOVA 17 principle, played to us till, unable to bear it any-longer, we about two oclock faced the weatheragain. No one could give information concerningthe steamer, but at three the lights on its mastsappeared, and it soon hove alongside. We lay off Belgrade, which is close by, untildaylight, and before we awoke in the morning hadleft it far behind. We had not been incUned toland there—it was not very long since tragicevents had directed the attention of the wholeworld to Servia—and, in fact, should not havebeen allowed to do so without special pass-ports. Two harmless Germans who landed from thenext steamer were submitted to the indignity ofbeing stripped by the police in search for seditiouspamphlets, which they were suspected of intro-ducing, though their papers were in perfect order. We saw them afterwards at Orsova, still unable tocontrol their righteous wrath. Zimony is the last Hungarian town on the rightbank of the Danube. A journey of ten hours down-strea
