Description

The hummingbird moth is called that because it hovers while feeding and beats its wings very rapidly, producing a humming noise. Sometimes mistaken for a hummingbird because of the noise and feeding habits. Note that even at 1/8000 second exposure, there's some motion blur on the wing.

This is the clearwing moth. There are other versions with opaque wings. The moth is common in Europe and Asia, where it is called a bee moth [Wikipedia].

I've seen several of these in the flowers, mostly like this one, but there's another one with red coloration. They seem to prefer the purple flowers, particularly Verbena Bonairensis (shown here).
