Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This grand mausoleum is the first tomb of a Mughal emperor to be built in India. But, over the years, it also came to be the resting place of more than 150 Mughal family members. In 1993,it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A landmark in the development of Mughal architecture, it was commissioned in 1569 and built in 1570, after the death of the Mughal emperor Humayun in 1556, by his Persian queen Hamidah Bano Begam. It was designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas. For the first time, important architectural innovations were made including creating a char-bagh- a garden setting inspired by the description of paradise in the Holy Quran.
