| Description | Thanks to a communist Government that has ruled the state for over forty years, Calcutta does not seem enjoy the kind of prosperity seen in the cities of Bombay, Poona, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Delhi or Hyderabad, and you see people in extreme poverty doing very physically stressful menial tasks. And probably due to this, Calcutta is the only Indian city which still has human powered rickshaws. Much has been said and written about the hand-driven rickshaws in Calcutta and the plight of the men who continue to pull these rickshaws. And even after the government promising to the hand-drawn rickshaws off the road and replace them with better alternatives, nothing has been done. The hand-pulled rickshaw is still a regular practice today. (May 2009) |
