[edit]DescriptionHuman effigy pipe - Cleveland Museum of Art (29747900574).jpg |
Pipe in the form of a human being, at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Pipestone. Made between 100 BC and 100 AD in Ohio by the Adena people. Found in 1901 at the Adena Mound in Ross County, Ohio. It has been designated "Ohio's State Artifact". The Adena people lived in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The early stage of their culture, known as "Adena culture" (as opposed to the later golden age of their culture, known as the "Hopewell culture"), existed from 1000 to 200 BC. The Adena culture had a complex ceremonial system, and buried their dead in mausoleums before burying the mausoleum beneath a mound ranging from 20 to 300 feet in width. The tops of these mounds then served as ceremonial and communal sites until another mausoleum was constructed and buried atop it. The Adena pioneered the use of the weeping eye, and cross and circle, as art motifs. These later were used widely thorughout North America. The Adena had a fascination with lycanthropy (humans into animals and back to human), and they fashioned distinctive upright pipes. The Adena both smoked tobacco and a hallucinogenic plant similar to tobacco. This pipe depicts a human male with open mouth, flexed knees, and swollen throat, probably indicating he was engaged in singing and dancing. Tobacco was placed in the bowl behind the feet, and the smoke inhaled through a tube that ran the length of the body. |
