English: Hull College, Park Street. Pevsner says "Built c.1856, greatly enlarged 1869 by William Botterill with further additions in the 1870s. Initially a private school, then an orphanage 1867-1897. In 1898 in opened as Hull Municipal Technical School, a predecessor of Hull College, with alterations and additions by Botterill, Son & Bilson (John Bilson). White brick with stone dressings. The main facade is of three storeys and thirteen bays. The five-bay block to the l. with three-bay pediment is the original building of the 1850s. To this, in 1869, was added the centre three bays and the matching five-bay block to the r. The centre three bays break forward with a pediment which contains a sculpture by W.D. Keyworth of Charity with orphan children, maritime emblems and the arms of Sir Titus Salt, the major benefactor of the orphanage. Central entrance of paired Doric columns with balustrade. Tripartite windows above with segmental pediment, flanking windows with triangular pediments." For a picture of the pediment sculpture see 635542. |
