Summary

[edit]
Description Built by Societe Alsacienne (3755/1885) for the Nord as a 2-2-0, it was rebuilt in 1895 as a 4-2-2-0 (like the LNWR Webb compounds). It was the first de Glehn-du Bousquet 4-cyl compound. Shown in the Paris Exhibition 1889. 3/10. Incidentally, de Glehn - real name "von Glehn" was not French. He was born and raised in Sydenham, Kent of a Scottish mother and a father from the Baltic states of German descent. Von Glehn moved to France (and eventually Alsace to work for the Societe Alsacienne) because he could not get a job in England and there he thought it appropriate to change his name to de Glehn - not with the best of timing because soon after the Franco - Prussian War 1870 broke out and Alsace became part of Germany. Thus all his locomotive work took place - technically - in Germany (though admittedly for French Railways)! He could thus be called English, Scottish, German or Baltic German - but hardly French!
