Summary

[edit]
Description How often do you get TWO Garter Blue A4's next to each other! Here are No.4468 "Mallard" and No.4464 "Bittern" at Barrow Hill, 04/12. Note the slight differences in livery: "Mallard" has a black background to its nameplate whilst its wheels have Indian Red spokes only - the tyres are polished steel. In comparison, "Bittern" has an Indian Red background to its nameplate whilst both its wheels and tyres are Indian Red. It may be that "Mallard" is in the original 1937 livery and "Bittern" in the Garter Blue livery re-introduced by Thompson in 1945-46 after WWII - though if that was the case then "Bittern" would have had the valences removed. Moreover, although I have never seen any reference to the A4 double chimneys being different in profile, those of "Mallard" and "Bittern" appear so to me. "Mallard"s chimney seems to be a little taller with a more rounded rear profile than "Bittern's". Is it significant that "Mallard" had its double chimney fitted by the LNER from new in 1937 whilst "Bittern" was built with a single chimney and had its double Kylchap fitted by BR in 1957.
