New York, Chicago & St.Louis RR ("Nickel Plate Route") "L-1a" Class 4-6-4 No.170 built by ALCO 1927, at the National Museum of Transport, St Louis, 8/70. ALCO built 4 "L-1a's" in 1927 (withdrawn 1956-58) and Lima built 4 "L-1b's" in 1929 (withdrawn 1953-58). They were the second U.S. "Hudsons" but one of smallest, being developed from the USRA Light Pacifics but with a rear four wheel truck to lower the axle load for routes with weak bridges. |
