well. GarijSIelchers, in Easter Day,shows himself a trueartist by the beauty heextracts from common-place materials. Has-sam, who has a goodlysized and most inter-esting group of etchingson view, as well as sev-eral other paintings, contributes also thewonderfully harmoni-ous Moonrise at Sunset—the Laurel. Among the men still longer established thanthese just mentioned, the following arc repre-sented: Duveneck, Blakelock, Horatio Walker,de Forest Brush, Dewing, and .Chase. The last-named artists Portrait of the Honorable WilliamA. Clark is particularly apropos because the cashprizes accompanying the Gallerys medals wereagain made possible through the generosity ofthe sitter; this painting also brings home to usthe nature of the loss American art has recentlysustained in the death of the painter. Dainger-field exhibits The Strife of Waters, pulsating withpowerful colour. Sargent has a room to himself,an honour justified by the high rank universallyaccorded him among our artists. CXII

The Corcoran Gallery of Art, lVashingt07t, D. C. NUDE WITH STILL LIFE BY HUGH H. nRF.CKENRIDGR But after all, the work of the older men oughtnot to make up the bulk of any collection exceptone premeditatedly retrospective; in art no lessthan in politics it is but fitting that Americashould be forward-looking. For this reason itis pleasant to record the fact that the jury inWashington this year has been more generousthan pre\^ously in the measure of recognitionaccorded to those who have known what it is tobe slighted. There is some quality about Glac-kens apparently awkward work which yet ren-ders his most commonplace subject, such asBathers on a Beach, interesting. A kindred spiritis Sloan, whose Spring Planting, Greenwich Vil-lage, Manhattan is racy anecdote. Henris reclin-ing full-length, BctaloRubino as a DancingGirl of Delhi, vergesdangerously close tomere cleverness. Bel-lows The Sawdust Trailenables one to sense theclap-trap and hys-teria of the Sunday cir-cus. And so would itbe
