English: The Hua-i T'u "Map of China and the Barbarian Countries", one of the two most important monuments of mediaeval Chinese cartography, carved in stone in +1136/1137 but probably dating from about +1040 (from Chavannes). The size of the original (which bears the full explanatory text) which is now in the Stone Forest Museum at Xi'an, is about 3 ft (1 m) square. The name of the geographer is not known. |
